Many cars, these days, have satellite navigation. You tell it where you want to go, it works out where you are and then it tells you how to get there. If you decide to override the spoken instruction, the machines start thinking very hard. Their electronic voices are supposed to be unemotional. Yet it's all too easy to detect a note of implied criticism in the tone they then take. You are now choosing your own course. Regardless of who (or who you think) approves (or disapproves) of this, you need to stick to it.
