Yet when we try to find out who 'they' actually are and hold them accountable for the influence of their statements, we end up chasing rainbows. There are, of course, times when it must be right to put aside pride and walk away from a situation that has become too difficult. But surely first we have to be able to say that we have really tried our best. Are rules made to be kept - or to be broken? Or does it depend, perhaps, on who made them and why, and whether they might have secretly envisaged circumstances under which a transgression was acceptable?
