A small change can sometimes make a big difference. Yet we tend to attach much more importance to big, dramatic, transformations. When, for example, we are unhappy with a situation, we will envisage any number of glorious, imaginary, interventions. Yet the root of the discomfort may well be comparatively minor. Celebrities, it often seems, are permitted behavioural excesses that ordinary folk might choose to display at their peril. We expect them to act and dress in unconventional ways. Yet there remain many lines that nobody, no matter how popular or famous can ever cross. Every day we compile a list of things to remember. We rarely strive to write down the things that we need to forget. Generally, indeed, we treat forgetfulness as a kind of failure of memory. But under some circumstances, the ability to be absent minded can reveal great presence of mind! In allowing various matters to escape our attention, we may actually be protecting ourselves from a need to focus on tasks or situations which will ultimately prove irrelevant. Don't be in too much of a rush to get up to date.
