The world is full of people who really ought to learn to think more carefully about what they are doing. So many assumptions are made. So many automatic responses take place. It is almost as if we are all sleep-walkers. Every so often we wake, look at what's happening, decide that we really must do something constructive and then fall straight back into the dream. Yet that's a harsh view. We can equally argue that we are mainly awake with an occasional tendency to doze.
When there is serious tension, conflict or resentment between people, they bring out the worst in each other.Anxiety distorts judgement. People who are worried can't think straight, any more than people who are hungry, tired or in the process of giving up an addiction can. When a pressing need occupies so much of our attention, there is no room for calm, considered, thought. And even if we are instinctively making the right choices, we may still doubt ourselves. Your first priority this, is to find a more reassuring view of a bothersome situation. As even false hope is better than no hope, no hope can be a false hope.
How much excitement do you want? How many intense emotional experiences do you feel you need? Do you have to get caught up in some great drama? Must you deal with problem after problem? Sorry to ask all these questions, but then questions themselves can be so very destabilising. As soon as we start to ask them, we begin to chip away at whatever is making us feel most stable and secure. You can't just ignore an unsatisfactory situation, but nor do you have to give it your full attention right now Imagine if one day we all wake up to find we are living in an ideal world. A new dawn, a new deal, a new Jerusalem (let's hope it's more peaceful than the old one). Will anything really be different? Well, it will be for you because, whilst your situation remains far from ideal, you are at the start of a big turning point in your emotional journey.
