Divine Spark

“The idea, most common to Gnosticism but also present in most Western Mystical Traditions such as Kabbalah and Sufism that all of mankind contains within itself the Divine Spark of God which is contained or imprisoned in the body…In these cosmologies the purpose of life is to enable the Divine Spark to be released from its captivity in matter and reestablish its connection with or simply return to God who is perceived as being the source of the Divine Light.
Into the realm of light they reside in stillness. Without need of the elements, for what is it? It is consciousneshis divine spark has been noted by many names. Among the ancientMesopotamians, this divine spark was noted as the “power of Anu.”  Many Christian mystics associate this divine spark with the Christ. In other religious and spiritual paradigms different names are given, but the ancient teachings are still the same in regard to the nurturing of this divine qualityWhile we are all witnesses to the changes that occur in the phenomenal world, including our emotional and physical bodies, we are not the cause of these changes. The body we possess today is different from the body we had as an infant.  A boy at the age of twelve years old did not consciously will himself into his present body as a child. These changes occurred through invisible processes that occur in time, and it is for this reason that the ancient spiritual teachings stated that “man is asleep.” He is not in control of the processes that shape and mold his environment or even the physical body that is a vital part of what he claims to be his existence. Man is unable to “do” anything on his own accord. He is asleep. The only way that man can change this condition is to awaken.Life is changing all around us. What is here today will eventually pass. Our emotional states are changing from one moment to the next. Our perception of life is shaped by experiences that “happen” to us. This process occurs also in animal, mineral, and plant life. It is the same with the celestial bodies existing in heaven.
